Factory Layout and Planning DIRECTIONS

Directions for students. Your assignment is to lay out a small toy production plant. Take into consideration the eight factors below that make for an efficient work place and use the getting started material provided. Cut out the machine templates, room patterns, and accessories from the page labeled Organize Your Factory. Place them onto the existing warehouse floor plan in the proper location using the flow chart diagram as a guide. Draw an arrow from machine to machine to show the production flow.

Each machine and accessory is listed below with the requirements for placement. After you have finished setting up the toy plant, be sure you verifv that it is correct before gluing the machines down. Color in machine templates and walkways. Be prepared to justify why you placed the machines where you did.

Machines and Accessories

Table saw. Cuts wood to the correct length and width. It requires at least eight feet of clearance around it.

Band saw. Cuts irregular wood shapes; requires four feet of clearance.

Drill press. Drills round holes in Wood; requires two feet of clearance.

Planer. Reduces the thickness of wood before it is sent to the jointer. Requires eight feet of clearance in fron and rear to process wood. It is the factory's loudest machine.

Jointer. Straightens out the edge of wood so that it is ready for the table saw. It requires eight feet of clearance at both ends.

Sander. Smoothes out surfaces; requires two feet of clearance.

Shaper. This machine puts a decorative shape on wood that comes from the table saw; it requires eight feet of clearance at each end to process wood. Benches, finish room, office, and stockroom are placed as stated in the planning essentials.
