Course Description
: The content of this course focuses generally on graphic applications. Students will learn to alter images in a variety of formats for a desired purpose. Desktop publishing will be explored and a variety of related assignments completed. In addition, this class will introduce students to the use of digital photography. Students will also learn to create their own font.

Course Outline:

1. Animated GIF Design- This component includes: an overview of .gif files, finding and incorporating .gifs in projects, and .gif design using Adobe ImageReady.

A. Total Unit Time: 3 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Original student created GIF designs (including a custom smiley) which will be incorporated into future projects

2. Image Manipulation- This unit focuses on creative imaging effects using Adobe Photoshop. Students learn to make realistic image alterations as well as artistic changes to graphic works. They learn to make alterations to images to achieve a desired result. The class explores where and when these skills will be useful as well as the file formats used and their properties.  Later in the year students will also create a web based photo gallery using Photoshop.

A. Total Unit Time: 6 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Incorporating self into a variety of photos, removing items from images, altering color, lighting, size, and format of graphic

3. Desktop Publishing- This segment deals with a variety of visual media (including: brochures, menus, posters) relating to the advertising industry using Adobe PageMaker software.

A. Total Unit Time: 3 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Projects advertising a fictional business as discussed above and the reproduction of a selection of magazine pages.

4. Morphing- This section of the course covers the use of Morph software in which students can work with still photos or video to turn one object into another.

A. Total Unit Time: 3 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Faculty web page design and maintenance, club / activity page design, and student pages

6. Font Design- Students examine common fonts and how fonts are applied on the Internet.  They locate and install fonts of interest to them found online.  Then using Font Creator they create an alphabet of their own design which can be installed and used with all word processing programs.

A. Total Unit Time: 2 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Production of a new font file of original design inlcuding all symbols and characters.

7. File Types- Students study a selection of commonly used file types inlcuding .pdf and .zip files.  They explore there uses and create examples of these types of work.

A. Total Unit Time: 1 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Creation of a variety of file types.

8. Folder and File ICONS- Students will learn about icons files associated with various files.  Students will explore icon files available online and create original works using text, clipart, and photos.

A. Total Unit Time: 1 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Produce 6-10 file folder icons and collect a selection of online products.

9. ScreenSavers- Although screensavers are an accessorizing feature for computers in this day and age they are still enjoyed by all ages.  Students will learn to create an original screensaver using their own photos, music, and video clips.

A. Total Unit Time: 1 weeks

  ü Assignments Include: Creation of two screensavers using different programs and a comparative evaluation between the two programs.

 

 

Evaluation: Methods of evaluation may include:

Current Event Essays- approximately 5 current event essays will be assigned each quarter with a length of 200 words each.
Participation and Behavior- this portion of a student’s grade is a reflection of their behavior, attendance, input, and observance of classroom rules.
Class Projects- in class work counts as a significant portion of the student’s grade, rubrics are provided for each assignment.
Online Quizzes- require students to show knowledge of programs used in class and information provided from readings and class discussions.
